Steelers Lose 2 Touchdowns but Win, 16-7

PITTSBURGH —  Overcoming two first-half touchdowns wiped out by penalties, the Pittsburgh Steelers used Neil O’Donnell’s 34-yard touchdown pass play to Ron Fair in the fourth quarter to defeat the Washington Redskins, 16-7, in an NFL exhibition game Sunday night.

Chip Lohmiller missed two field goal attempts for the Redskins, who played all four of their quarterbacks a quarter apiece and were inconsistent offensively. Fourth-teamer Cary Conklin accounted for Washington’s lone score by throwing a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Ervins with 28 seconds left in the first half.

Pittsburgh starter Bubby Brister played all but one play of the first half and completed 11 of 14 passes for 114 yards, but had touchdown passes to Louis Lipps and Merril Hoge reversed by penalties.

Pittsburgh’s Gary Andersen kicked field goals of 27, 27 and 54 yards.
