SKY WATCH--Amid controversy over noise reduction at John Wayne Airport, enter Continental Airlines Capt. Linden Laviano. . . . The pilot says he and others were never told of the rule to cut power at altitude 500 feet to reduce jet noise--and don’t. Continental’s and other airlines’ operations manuals call for the power cutback at 1,000 feet, Laviano says. Airport spokeswoman Courtney Wiercioch isn’t surprised. One airline’s manual failed to tell pilots that normal airport takeoff is south over the ocean.
