Latest in a Series of Trojan Troubles

Once again, we see a respected school, its athletic tradition and its alumni shamed as a result of the follies of its athletic department (“Two Ex-USC Players Sentenced,” July 24). The sad affair has an all-too-familiar ring.
Since football Coach Larry Smith permitted Aaron Emanuel to put on a Trojan uniform after Emanuel’s heroic escapade against his female antagonist, much of the pride and joy of identifying with the glory of past Trojan accomplishments has fast dimmed. Why is it that individuals continue to be recruited with attention paid only to their completion percentages or yards gained per game, but never to the content of their character?
