‘Echoes’ Silenced: CBS has canceled this weekend’s repeat showing of “Echoes in the Darkness,” a miniseries about the slayings of a Pennsylvania schoolteacher and her two children, because of a pending retrial in the case. The two-part program, first broadcast in 1987, tells the story of former high school principal Jay C. Smith’s conviction and death sentence in the slayings of teacher Susan Reinert and the children. Smith, 62, won a new trial when the state Supreme Court ruled the trial judge had improperly allowed hearsay evidence. The scheduled rebroadcasts on Sunday and Tuesday will be replaced by “Gunsmoke II” and “Beverly Hills Cop II.”
