World IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : Detainees Tortured, Rights Group Says

Amnesty International urged an end to what it called the systematic torture of Palestinian detainees by Israeli police and soldiers. The London-based human rights organization said prisoners are regularly hooded with dirty sacks and shackled in painful positions. “They are also frequently beaten all over their bodies, including on their genitals,” the group’s report said. “What is extremely disturbing,” the report said, “is that there are actually secret official guidelines allowing ‘moderate physical pressure’ during interrogation.”
