Carter on the Next War
Former President Carter’s analysis, “Armies Won’t Win the Next War” (Commentary, July 7), was right on target. The combined assaults on the life-support systems of our planet are already causing needless deaths and dislocations of people.
The exciting thing about the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), or the Earth summit, is that it will be a solution-oriented survival meeting of the people of the world.
The important thing is not just what happens in Brazil in 1992 but whether people all over the planet wake up in time to move toward environmentally sound and sustainable development.
Global environmental problems require international cooperation at the governmental level, but more important they require solutions at the local level.
For our own sake and the sake of future generations we must all ensure that the Earth summit is a success.
