Julian
A 21-year-old Navy man attached to a San Diego-based destroyer was killed when the car in which he was riding hit a tree near Julian, authorities said Monday.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Gregory Stryker died of massive chest injuries at 10:02 p.m. Sunday at Palomar Medical Center, a few hours after the car, driven by Petty Officer 2nd Class Louis J. Ottavio crashed on California 79, said Max Murphy, a county deputy medical examiner investigator.
Ottavio, 25, is in stable condition with a fractured leg and fractured pelvis, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday. He and Stryker were off duty from the destroyer Robison at the time of the accident, according to a Navy spokesman.
Ottavio has been arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and felony vehicular manslaughter, Roque said.
