NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Lost Mountain Rallies to Win Dwyer Stakes
Lost Mountain came from last in the field of seven to win the $200,000 Dwyer Stakes by a length over Smooth Performance at Belmont Park on Sunday.
Smooth Performance raced on or near the lead throughout the 1 1/8 miles in his first start for trainer Wayne Lukas and finished 2 1/2 lengths in front of favored Fly So Free. The order of finish was completed by Subordinated Debt, Lost Dutchman, Man Alright and Honest Ensign.
It was Lost Mountain’s third victory and second in a row in a stakes, all at Belmont Park. He ran wide on the turn to join the leaders and edged ahead in the final yards to win in 1:49 1/5.
Lost Mountain, ridden by Craig Perret, earned $120,000 and returned $19.20, $6.80 and $2.80. Smooth Performance paid $8.80 and $3 and Fly So Free paid $2.10.
Southland-based Olympio caught Richman in the final strides to win the Grade II Minnesota Derby by a nose at Canterbury Downs in Shakopee, Minn.
Ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, Olympio was timed in 1:46 2/5, beating the track record of 1:47 4/5 for 1 1/8 miles set by Present Value in the 1989 Canterbury Cup. Olympio, the slight favorite, paid $4, $2.20 and $2.20.
Dance Smartly took the lead in the stretch over stablemate Wilderness Song and won the Queen’s Plate by eight lengths at Woodbine, near Toronto. Dance Smartly covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2:03 2/5.
