A Guide to the Best of Southern California : EXCURSIONS : View Finder
If taking to the air in an enclosed, pressurized cabin just isn’t your idea of flying, how about winging it an antique open-cockpit propeller-driven biplane? Veteran aviatrix Bertie Duffy, who operates the Bird’s Nest out of Pacoima’s Whiteman Airport, will take you up 3,000 feet in her vintage 1941 Boeing Stearman. You can take in the spectacular vistas with nothing but a leather helmet and goggles between you and the elements. Trips cost $90 for a half hour or $150 for an hour. Gift certificates are available.
Bertie Duffy, by appointment only; (818) 890-5410.
