Women’s Role in Society
June 18 was a bad news day for women everywhere. Not only did the Louisiana Legislature override Gov. Buddy Roemer’s veto of a strict anti-abortion bill, but also a majority of the military chiefs denounced women in combat roles (Part A, June 19). The injustice of both actions clearly illustrates the position women hold in this society: second-class citizens unable to act and think for themselves.
It is unfortunate our leaders have not received the message that millions of women have been struggling for--freedom of choice and equal opportunity to make that choice. More women must speak out! Until women realize the limitations to our personal freedoms and take a stand, there will continue to be a great deal of bad news.
