Thousand Oaks residents used 27.6% less water in June than they did last year, reducing consumption for the fourth straight month, a city official said Tuesday.
Consumption by about 12,800 customers who get their water directly from the city dropped by 30.6%, compared with June, 1990, said Paul Swenson, city water conservation coordinator.
About 17,000 customers served by the California-American Water Co. trimmed consumption by 29.6%, and 6,600 customers served by California Water Service Co. cut their use by 20.1%.
“I think they’re getting the hang of it. Also June was not a very hot month compared to last year,” Swenson said. “At least half the water use is for irrigational purposes. Weather has a lot to do with it.”
In May, Thousand Oaks customers cut consumption by about 22%.
It was the fourth month that customers have recorded a drop in consumption. The city recorded a drop of about 58% in March, primarily because it was rainy, Swenson said.
The city in March ordered customers to trim consumption by 20%, after an announcement that its primary water supplier, the Calleguas Municipal Water District, would cut supplies of imported water because of the drought.
