On Golden Pit: A plan to open a gravel pit near the lake that inspired the play and movie “On Golden Pond” has Maine residents up in arms. Great Pond, a 13-square-mile lake in central Maine, is the proposed site of an 8.6-acre pit where Tilcon-Maine Inc. plans to mine 525,000 cubic yards of rock crushed into gravel for use in asphalt. Rock crushers would run 12 hours a day Monday through Friday, and sometimes on Saturdays. The plan was attacked at a hearing of the state Department of Environmental Protection board hearing that delivered no decision.
