Kuwait Sets Deadline for Giving Up Arms
KUWAIT CITY — Alarmed by the number of accidental deaths caused by loose weapons and ammunition, the Kuwaiti government is giving its citizens one month to give up their arms or face prosecution.
The order, issued by the Interior Ministry, applies to Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis. They must surrender their weapons at designated police stations throughout Kuwait city.
Civilians holding gun licenses must reapply for new licenses under the order. Violators face up to a five-year prison sentence.
Officials said that the Kuwaiti government is considering house-to-house searches for weapons and ammunition.
