NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Reporter Can Be Jailed, Court Says
A federal appeals court ruled that Washington Post reporter Linda C. Wheeler could be jailed if she refused to disclose who gave her the police plans for a drug raid. Wheeler wrote after the raid that she had obtained the plans but she reported nothing beforehand. Six white Washington officers who were disciplined over the failure of the raid are suing, complaining discrimination by black Police Chief Isaac Fulwood. Two U.S. Park policemen have testified that Wheeler told them she had obtained the plans from Fulwood, then an assistant chief. Fulwood has denied giving the plans to anyone. Wheeler could ask for a rehearing or appeal to the Supreme Court.
