Theft Suspect Dies After Hanging Himself in Cell
GARDEN GROVE — A 33-year-old man arrested on suspicion of petty theft Friday hanged himself in a police holding cell, authorities said.
The man, described as a transient, was found dead in his cell just after 2 p.m., Police Sgt. Patrick Thrasher said. The victim had apparently used his shirt to hang himself by tying it to the top of the jail bars.
The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was arrested earlier in the day in connection with the theft of a Walkman cassette player from a local shop, Thrasher said.
The district attorney’s office, following standard procedure, is investigating the incident, Thrasher said.
