Closing arguments continued Friday in the murder trial of Stacy Butler, the ex-convict accused of murdering San Diego police officer Jerry Hartless in 1988.

Defense attorney William Nimmo, continuing the argument he began Thursday, picked away at the prosecution theory presented by Deputy Dist. Atty. Keith Burt.

Nimmo used various metaphors to describe prosecution claims about the discovery of the murder weapon and what he said were conflicting statements from other officers.

“Isn’t it strange that all these ducks just don’t line up,” said Nimmo, referring to various physical descriptions of Butler given by officers at the scene.

Butler, who is a member of the Southeast San Diego “Syndo” mob gang, could be sentenced to die in the gas chamber if he is convicted of the murder of Hartless.

Nimmo will conclude his arguments Monday, and the jury is expected to begin deliberations Tuesday.
