USC, U.S. Agency Differ Over Apology on Billing
USC and a federal agency differed Monday over an apology made last week by federal officials who had accused the school of billing the U.S. government for $3.1 million in improper research expenses.
USC issued a news release and held a news conference Monday announcing that the government had apologized for “inaccurately” reporting that USC had submitted questionable bills.
But officials with the Office of the Inspector General in the Department of Health and Human Services said an apology issued by the office’s regional inspector general Friday was for publicly disclosing the matter before the investigation was complete. An audit of the school’s research billing practices continues.
