Roy Tarpley of the Dallas Mavericks was arrested in Houston and charged with misdemeanor assault of a woman who says she is his girlfriend, police said. He was released on $500 bond. If convicted, he could face up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
The woman, who had a dislocated right shoulder and bruises on her back, was treated at a hospital and released.
According to the police report, the victim said she did not wish to press charges because she believed Tarpley would “cause her greater harm if arrested.” However, under Texas domestic violence law, officers must make an arrest if there is visible evidence of an assault.
Tarpley, who was married last July in Michigan, was arrested at the apartment without incident.
Tarpley, who has two strikes against him under the NBA’s drug policy, had been in Houston the past two weeks seeking treatment at the John Lucas Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Clinic on an outpatient basis, according to Dallas General Manager Norm Sonju.
Police said there were no indications of alcohol or drug use.
