Whether you’re working or playing, somehow it’s always trendier to look as if you’re playing. The hard part is coming up with sporty clothes that seem new and fresh.
“We’ve updated the basic idea of the romper from the ‘40s--it’s playful but chic,” says Los Angeles designer Holly Sharp. “It often looks like a short dress, but it’s much easier to move in because it’s actually pants.”

Rompers in all variations--cutoff overalls in printed denim and dress-like versions in silky fabrics--have no waists, so they’re infinitely more comfortable than anything made of clingy Lycra. Many can be worn alone or with T-shirts for a trip to the market or laundry. Others make for all-day dressing that goes easily from afternoon errands to evenings out.
