TENNIS ROUNDUP : 17-Year-Old Eliminates McEnroe in Straight Sets
Dino Pescariu, a 17-year-old Romanian, defeated John McEnroe, 6-2, 6-2, Wednesday in the completion of a first-round match delayed by rain the day before in the BMW Open at Munich.
“Today, I would have lost against my mother,” McEnroe said. “If I keep playing like this I may as well quit. I just didn’t have any feeling for the ball.”
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl took 71 minutes to defeat Alexander Mronz of Germany, 6-2, 6-2; second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia beat Eric Jelen of Germany, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, and Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina downed David Engel of Sweden, 7-5, 6-2.
Anders Jarryd of Sweden, defeated Jonas Svensson, also of Sweden, 6-4, 6-1, Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia beat Mark Woodforde of Australia, 6-3, 6-3, and Horst Skoff of Austria downed Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-4, 6-2.
Top-seeded Monica Seles needed only 39 minutes to trounce Andrea Leand, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round of a women’s tournament at Hamburg, Germany.
Third-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain defeated Elna Reinach of South Africa, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2; fifth-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria beat Silke Frankl of Germany, 6-2, 6-2, and Anke Huber of Germany outlasted Rachel McQuillan of Australia, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6, (7-5), 6-4.
Second-seeded Sergi Bruguera of Spain, who has moved up to the world’s eighth ranking, defeated Tomas Carbonell, also of Spain, 6-4, 6-0, in an ATP tournament at Madrid.
Fourth-seeded Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia defeated Cassio Motta of Brazil, 6-3, 7-5, and sixth-seeded Franco Davin of Argentina beat Mats Wilander of Sweden, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, and seventh-seeded Jordi Arrese of Spain beat compatriot Jose Francisco Altur, 6-4, 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (7-2).
