Deputies Kill Man, 28, in Bar Confrontation
Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man who pointed a pistol at them at a Lynwood bar, officials said Wednesday. The dead man was identified as Martin Navarro Celio, 28, of Huntington Park.
The shooting occurred while two Lynwood deputies were making a bar check about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday at the Viva Mexico Cabaret Restaurant Nightclub, 11020 Atlantic Ave., said Deputy Roger Hom of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. They were walking toward the front of the building when they encountered Celio, who was armed with a 9 millimeter pistol, Hom said. The deputies identified themselves and ordered Celio to drop the weapon, Hom said.
Instead, Celio turned and pointed the gun at the deputies, Hom said. Fearing for their safety and that of patrons, “the deputies fired several times, wounding Celio in the upper torso,” Hom said. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.
