3 Players Sign Letters of Intent With Pomona

Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball Coach Darlene May, who guided the Broncos to an unprecedented 10th consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title last season, has signed three players to national letters of intent.

The Broncos, who reached the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and finished 22-9 last season, have added community college transfers Carrie Stritenberg from Napa Valley College and Sylvia Castaneda from L.A. Valley. and May also signed Kim Stanley from Crenshaw High in Los Angeles.

Stritenberg, a 6-foot forward, averaged 24.7 points and 12.7 rebounds at Napa Valley last season to earn a spot on the all-state team selected by Cal-Hi Sports magazine.

“Carrie will play power forward for us,” May said. “She is very strong around the basket and can rebound exceptionally well.”

May also has high expectations for Castaneda, a 5-9 guard who averaged 10.5 points and 6.4 assists and was selected to the All-Western State Conference first team last season. She also received All-Southern Section honors as a senior at Alemany High in Mission Hills.

“Sylvia is the point guard we need to replace Debbie Wagner,” May said. “Her aggressive level of play plus her ability to shoot the three-pointer gives us what we need at that position.”

May said Stanley, a 6-3 center, has the ability to develop into an outstanding inside player for the Broncos. She averaged 10 points and eight rebounds as a senior at Crenshaw.

During the early signing period in November, May signed All-Southern Section forward Tamika Phillips of Chaffey High.

Trailing first-place UC Riverside by percentage points, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team will face an important CCAA test when it visits Chapman for a three-game series.

The Broncos, who are 23-24 overall and ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division II by Collegiate Baseball magazine, will play Chapman at 3 p.m. today, 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. Chapman is in last place in the CCAA at 8-16 and 12-30 overall.

Pomona enters today’s game with a 14-10 CCAA record and Riverside is 13-9. The Broncos have six conference games remaining and Riverside has eight. The teams will meet for a three-game series next week.

The Broncos entered last week in first place in the CCAA, but lost two of three games to Cal State Los Angeles. Riverside swept a three-game series from Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Pomona’s leading batters are senior outfielder Ramiro Garcia, who has a .390 average, and junior outfielder Chris Hunt at .343.

Forward John Moses, a two-time All-South Coast Conference first-team selection for the Mt. San Antonio College men’s basketball team, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Cal State Northridge next season.

The 6-6 Moses averaged 15.8 points and seven rebounds as a sophomore at Mt. SAC. He also played four seasons at Edgewood High in West Covina, where he averaged 18 points and earned Valle Vista League most valuable player and All-CIF Southern Section first-team honors as a senior.

Four San Gabriel Valley high school teams, including two from Pasadena Poly, have been selected as 1990-91 CIF Southern Section Ford/California Angels Academic team champions.

The Southern Section selected Pasadena Poly in football and baseball, Rosemead in badminton and Claremont in boys’ tennis. Pasadena Poly posted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.33 in baseball and 3.19 in football; Rosemead was at 3.64, and Claremont at 3.74.

Teams must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 to be considered for the award.
