Advanced Logic Research Inc., the manufacturer of personal computers, on Wednesday reported higher earnings and revenue for its second quarter, ended March 31.

The company said earnings rose 29% to $4 million, up from $3.1 million for the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue rose 35% to $60.3 million, from $44.8 million a year earlier.

Gene Lu, chairman and chief executive, attributed the higher revenue primarily to sales of high-performance PCs based on Intel Corp.’s i386 and i486 microprocessors.

Lu said sales of the Irvine-based company’s notebook computer, which is small enough to fit in a briefcase, also helped drive up sales. The company sold 1,400 notebook computers during the quarter.

The growth in earnings, Lu said, was from cost-control efforts, including increased use of company-designed microchips rather than purchases from outside suppliers.

Mark Matheson, an analyst for Cruttenden & Co., a Newport Beach investment bank, said ALR’s earnings slightly exceeded Wall Street’s expectations.

“That’s not bad, given the lower earnings that other computer companies reported,” Matheson said.

For the six months ended March 31, the company reported earnings of $7.1 million on revenue of $110.2 million; earnings were $6.2 million on revenue of $84.3 million in the year-earlier period.
