Henry J. Muessen, 88, head of the Piel Brothers brewery, one of New York’s largest producers of beer in the first half of the century. Muessen joined Piel’s after repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and was president, chairman and chief executive when it was sold in 1962 to the American subsidiary of Drewry’s Ltd., a British brewery. He retired three years later from the brewery, which was founded in 1883. Piel’s developed the “Bert and Harry” advertising campaign, one of the first efforts to use humor to sell a product on television. The ads used the comedy team of Bob and Ray.
