Fire Adds to Woes of Downtown Hollister

HOLLISTER, Calif. — Fire roared through a downtown block Tuesday, destroying several businesses in an area already hit hard by disaster. No injuries were reported.
The downtown district suffered serious damage in the Oct. 17, 1989, earthquake that rocked Northern California and in two major fires last year.
“I’ve just been through so much here. I feel sick. I just feel kind of numb and sick. I don’t know how to describe it. I’ve been here almost two years next month, and it’s been nonstop trauma,” said Loree Babich, owner of Alternative and Holistic Therapies.
Her business was one six leveled in the fire.
“That’s 18 years of business going up in smoke in one hour. It’s very painful to see it happen,” said Gilbert Perez, owner of Crystal TV/Radio Shack, also struck by the fire.
Firefighters from six agencies battled to the fire. The cause was under investigation.
