Cathleen Kennedy
School: Fullerton High
Sport: Softball
Position: Pitcher
Class: Junior
In her third year as Fullerton’s starting pitcher, Kennedy is still fighting to keep her team in games. Fullerton (6-5-1) is an inexperienced squad with 10 players who are either freshmen or sophomores, but the Indians have won three consecutive games. “If she’s throwing well, we have a good shot at winning the game,” Fullerton Coach Scott Weber said. Last week, Kennedy was overpowering. In the first game of a doubleheader with Rosary, she didn’t allow a hit until the seventh inning, when Rosary scored two unearned runs to tie the score. Kennedy led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and eventually scored the winning run. She then pitched a three-hitter in the second game, another 3-2 Fullerton victory, finishing with 23 strikeouts in the two games. Later in the week, Kennedy pitched her first no-hitter of the season and third in two years, a 2-0 victory over Magnolia, striking out 14.
Other top performers:
Misty Lauby, who pitched a no-hitter in El Toro’s 6-0 softball victory over Edison and a one-hitter in a 12-1 victory over Saddleback.
Jennifer Surface, who pitched a perfect game, her second no-hitter of the season, as Pacifica defeated La Quinta, 2-0.
Elinor Tolson, who won the 100-meter low hurdles in 14.7 and the 300 low hurdles in 48.8 in Fountain Valley’s dual meet with Huntington Beach.
