COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Men’s Doubles Team Helps Irvine Win
Neal Grover and Charles Wheeler of UC Irvine won in doubles to help UC Irvine to a 5-4 victory over New Mexico in a nonconference men’s tennis match Monday at Irvine.
Grover and Charles defeated Gene Carswell and Roy Canada, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6, to break a 4-4 tie for host UC Irvine (7-3).
Mike Roberts won, 6-2, 6-3, Carsten Hoffmann won, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, Jeff Miyamoto won, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, and Brett Stern won, 6-3, 6-4, for Irvine.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Penn 5, Cal State Fullerton 4--Visiting Penn (8-4) won three singles and two doubles matches at the Sunny Hills Racquet Club in Fullerton.
Kelli Moore won, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, Caroline Sporer won, 6-3, 6-2, and Roseann Alva won, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in singles for Fullerton (3-7).
