Lavon Barve, a 45-year-old printer, held a slim lead in the 1,160-mile Iditarod Sled Dog race in Alaska.
Barve has always been a strong contender in the race, but has never won it. Barve left Kaltag, the last Yukon River checkpoint, Monday at 8 a.m. He was followed by defending champion Susan Butcher and Swiss-born musher Martin Buser.
