From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The trial of Rep. Floyd H. Flake (D-N.Y.) and his wife on tax-fraud charges began in New York. The minister-lawmaker is charged with taking money from his church, depositing it in his own accounts and failing to report it at tax time. The trial is being watched by blacks across the country, some of whom see a pattern of investigations of elected black officials. Flake pleaded not guilty in August, and three months later was reelected to a third term.
