HUNTINGTON BEACH : 2 Nursing Students Win Scholarships
- Share via
Two Golden West College nursing students have each been awarded $1,000 scholarships as part of a program that seeks to increase the number of ethnic minorities in the field and help fill the critical nursing shortage.
Dai Pham, 37, of Westminster and Susan Ortiz, 33, of Garden Grove earned the awards for academic success during the fall semester. Both students are now in their third semester of the four-semester nursing program.
The scholarships are among $200,000 in awards that Kaiser Permanente presents each year in an effort to increase and diversify the nation’s pool of nurses.
Pham, who moved to the area from Vietnam six years ago, plans to return to his homeland upon graduation to work in refugee camps. Ortiz, a mother of three, has returned to college after a nearly decade-long hiatus she had taken from her educational career to start a family.
Both students said they intend to begin their nursing careers working in surgical units.
