Taiwan, U.S. to Hold Trade Talks: Taiwan will come under pressure to cut import tariffs, crack down on trademark and patent piracy and open its financial sector further during trade talks with the United States this week. But sources close to the two sides said the discussions will be considerably less tense than in recent years. Under the threat of retaliatory sanctions, Taiwan slashed its huge trade surplus with the United States to $9.1 billion in 1990 from $12 billion in 1989 and a record $16 billion in 1987.
