1990-91 TIMES ALL-COUNTY TEAM : GIRLS
CHRISTINA ADAMS
Senior/Granite Hills
If it wasn’t for Adams transferring from Grossmont, the Eagles probably wouldn’t have had such a successful season. Adams, a second-year all-county choice, led Granite Hills to the Division I semifinals.
The 5-foot-7 guard finished as the county’s fourth leading scorer, averaging 22.8 points a game.
Adams committed to play at UC Irvine next year.
ALLISON BRADY
Junior/Poway
Poway was 26-1, won the Division I title, and Brady was the Palomar League’s player of the year, which should speak volumes. The 6-foot center was the team captain, averaged 11 points and nine rebounds a game in her second season as a starter, and she provided Poway with tough defense.
She could also take control of a game when necessary, like the championship game against Mt. Carmel, where she scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebunds.
VICKI DE JESUS
Senior/Mt. Carmel
In the three years de Jesus has started at Mt. Carmel, her team reached the Division I semifinals, won the section title, and played for the section title. The 5-foot-9 forward is the school’s all-time scoring leader (1,280), male or female.
Her 13.0 scoring average is four points fewer than last season when she made the All-County team, but she shot 50% from the floor (116 of 132) and averaged nine rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
SHEILA DIXON
Senior/Lincoln
What makes Sheila Dixon a force under the basket is her great leaping ability. The 6-foot-3 center can even dunk--at least she can dunk a softball. She’s still working on a basketball. “I can’t palm a basketball,” she explained.
Dixon’s 24.5 scoring average was No. 2 in the county. In the section championship, a 63-34 victory over Coronado, her coach, Dorothy Robinson told the team, “Hey, when you miss, make sure you hit the front of the rim so Sheila can get the rebound.”
HEATHER HOLM
Junior/El Cajon Valley
After standout Debbie Duhany graduated, Holm, a 5-foot-11 junior, stepped in and led the Braves to the Division II title.
Holm averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. However, in three of her four Section playoff games, Holm scored 20, 27 and 30 points.
Just a junior, she will likely return as the nucleus of the Braves.
CHRISTINA MURGUIA
Senior/Castle Park
A two-time selection, Murguia was the leading scorer in the county, averaging 26.8 points. The 6-foot-1 center also averaged 15.9 rebounds and led the Trojans to the section Division II semifinals, where they lost to eventual champion El Cajon Valley.
A superb athlete, Murguia has already signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at San Diego State. She was a four-year first-team Metro Conference selection in basketball and volleyball, and a potential four-time pick in softball.
VANESSA NYGAARD
Sophomore/Carlsbad
Selected player of the year in the Avocado League, Nygaard, a 6-foot center, averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists a game for Division II runner-up Carlsbad. But her coach, John Duperville, said it was her intensity that set her apart from other players. “She psyches herself so much that it psyches me up,” he said. “She keeps the action flowing. She doesn’t like when it gets too slow.”
Nygaard played for Carlsbad as a freshman, but Duperville said she raised her game to another level.
STEPHANIE THOMPSON
Senior/Santana
Thompson, a 5-foot-10 forward, and teammate Desiree Weimann are nucleus of Santana and are keeping the Sultans alive in the Southern California Regionals.
Thompson, a four-year starter, averaged 23.5 points and 12 rebounds per game during the season.
In Santana’s first-round victory over Costa Mesa, Thompson led the team with 31 points.
STACY WAINWRIGHT
Senior/Point Loma
Selected comments from county coaches on Wainwright:
University City’s Steve Vukojevich: “Super defense.” Vista’s Pat Moramarco: “Great defender.” Point Loma’s Shannon Anderson: “Best defensive player in the county.”
The 5-foot-8 forward is not one-dimensional, either. She averaged 15.2 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists for the Pointers (24-3).
DESIREE WEIMANN
Senior/Santana
The 5-foot-4 guard, a four-year starter, averaged 21.5 points, five rebounds and seven assists per game. After Santana’s victory over Kearny to claim the Division III title, Kearny Coach Joe Hernandez said, “We were worried about Weimann. Santana wouldn’t be much without her. She makes (Stephanie) Thompson and that team go.”
During Santana’s victory over Costa Mesa in the first round of the Southern California Regionals Weimann had 25 points.
