FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Sophomore Janet Evans won the 1,650-yard freestyle Saturday, giving her three women’s Pacific 10 Conference titles, and top-ranked Stanford won its fifth consecutive team championship.
Stanford had 1,640 points, 276 more than California. UCLA finished third. The Cardinal has won every conference team championship since the Pac-10 began sponsoring women’s swimming in 1987.
Evans, the triple gold medalist in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, won the 1,650 by 18.18 seconds in 16 minutes 2.92 seconds.
She earlier won conference titles in the 500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley.
Matching Evans’ three titles was Arizona’s Chrissy Ahman-Leighton, who won the 100 freestyle Saturday, edging UCLA’s Kristin Stoudt in 50.11 seconds.
