Stayrook Captures PBA Tournament

San Diegan Jess Stayrook defeated Walter Ray Williams Jr., 256-207, in the title match of the Professional Bowlers Association’s $130,000 Flagship City Open Saturday in Erie, Pa.

It was the second career title for the left-hander. He never trailed in the final game, striking on seven of his first eight shots.

The victory was worth $20,000 to Stayrook and requalified him for the prestigious Firestone Tournament of Champions. Williams earned $10,500 for second.

BASEBALL

Bill Dunckel and Scott Dennison both went 3-for-5 to pace SDSU to a 10-5 rout over Cal Lutheran at Smith Field. Dunckel doubled twice, tripled and scored three times, while Dennison had two runs batted in.

The Aztecs improved to 9-5; Cal Lutheran fell to 7-2. SDSU and Cal Lutheran will play the third and final game of the series here at 2 p.m. today.

The University of San Diego split a West Coast Conference double header with St. Mary’s College, dropping the first game, 5-3, and winning the second, 10-4, at Moraga.

Kevin Herde was 3-for-3 with three RBI’s in the second, where USD’s four-run third inning broke open the game. Steve Gousha and Tony Moeder hit solo home runs for USD (7-7-1, 4-4).

The Toreros collected 24 hits for the day, 13 in the second game. St. Mary’s dropped to 7-7, 4-5.

UC San Diego’s Sean Evans and Ernie Isola each went 2-for-4 in an 8-3 nonconference loss to Southern California College at Triton Field. Justin Pysar was 4-for-5 for SCC (5-5), including a two-run homer and two stolen bases. UCSD fell to 2-7.

James Gibson, a graduate of Escondido High and Palomar Junior College, homered twice and knocked in all four runs for U.S. International in a 9-4 nonconference loss at Long Beach State. The Gulls (5-9) play Long Beach State (7-8) today at 1 p.m. at USIU.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Rob Meeter set a single-season school rebound record as Christian Heritage defeated Dmonican, 131-82, in an NAIA District 3 contest at Patrick Henry.

Meeter pulled down 19 rebounds and scored a game-high 32 points, and Vernaldo Butler had 26 points in the Hawks’ season finale. It was a season-high scoring performance for Christian Heritage (10-18).

With a 101-92 victory over Moorpark, Grossmont College became the lowest seed to win an opening-round South Regional playoff game since 1985. The 25th-seeded Griffins (15-12) got 32 points and 15 rebounds from center Tony James to upset sixth-seeded Moorpark (25-6) at Moorpark. Guard Tim Barry collected 16 assists for Grossmont.
