GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : ‘Scared’ Estancia Team Whips Magnolia, 71-39

It was a blowout Saturday night as the Estancia High School girls’ basketball team demolished Magnolia, 71-39, in third-round Division III-A playoff action at Estancia.
The Eagles’ Robin Cordrey led all scorers with 16 points and teammate Patrice Lumpkin had 14. Senior guard Melody Earle finished the night with 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
The Eagles (25-1) led the Seminoles early on in the game as Cordrey had 10 of her points in the first quarter. At halftime, Estancia led, 37-25.
The lead was not a comfortable one for the Eagles, however. “In the first half, we came out a little bit lackadaisical,” Estancia Coach Lisa McNamee said. “(Magnolia) scared us, and we needed scaring. I think we might have been looking ahead to the next round, and you can’t do that. They made us play hard.”
The third quarter was nothing short of disastrous for the Seminoles (15-8), who could only muster three points. Six-foot co-captain Yalanda Hearvey, the tallest player on either team, fouled out with eight points for Magnolia.
