PREP BASKETBALL GIRLS’ PLAYOFFS : Phillips Scores 40 Points, Leads Chaffey Past Lakewood
Tamika Phillips’ 40 points, including a three-point play with 17 seconds left in regulation, powered Chaffey to a 70-68 double-overtime victory over Lakewood in a Southern Section I-A quarterfinal game Saturday night at Chaffey.
Phillips gave Chaffey (26-3) a 68-64 lead with 1 minute 50 seconds remaining in the second overtime with a free throw and three-point play.
Charon Johnson, who scored 29 points for Lakewood (25-2), forced the second overtime with a steal and layup.
Gahr 63, Westlake Village Westlake 46--Kris Waldorf hit four three-point baskets and scored 17 points and Allison Arredondo had 14 points and 18 rebounds in a II-AA game at Gahr (27-2). Westlake finished 20-7.
Woodbridge 38, Pioneer 34--Phoebe Hwang’s two free throws with 15 seconds left sealed the victory in a II-A game at Pioneer.
Nicole Schwartz had 16 points for Woodbridge (22-5). Dawn Grabiel had 16 for Pioneer (23-6).
Ridgecrest Burroughs 51, San Marcos 35--Darcy Rindt scored 14 points as Burroughs (21-6) won a II-A game at San Marcos. Katie Hoelter had 15 points for San Marcos (11-18).
St. Bernard 56, South Hills 42--Meredith Hardy scored 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter in a III-A game at St. Bernard High.
Leading, 28-26, at halftime, St. Bernard (23-6) outscored South Hills, 16-6, in the third quarter. St. Bernard’s Joy Turner had 17 points. Stephanie Ring had 16 for South Hills (18-7).
La Canada 44, Cabrillo 42--Cabrillo missed three shots in the final seconds which would have tied the III-A game at Cabrillo.
Melissa Lord had 20 points for La Canada (23-2). Molly Surrett and Stacie Vigil each had 13 for Cabrillo (5-21).
