COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Furukawa the Difference for Irvine
Joe Furukawa had a two-run single in the third inning and a two-run double in the ninth as UC Irvine defeated Pepperdine, 4-1, in a college baseball game Friday in Malibu.
Chris Huber (3-0) pitched eight innings for Irvine (9-7), allowing four hits, walking four, striking out six and allowing no runs. In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:
Cal State Dominguez Hills 7, Chapman 1--Ernie Soto had three hits, scored a run and had two runs batted in for host Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-6, 1-1 in the CCAA). Mike Giuseffi had a hit and an RBI for Chapman (4-9, 1-1).
In Golden State Athletic Conference:
Southern California College 98, Point Loma Nazarene 93--Jeff Bickmore scored 32 points for host Southern California College (23-7, 8-4).
In Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. men’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, Brigham Young 2--Steve Florentine had 19 kills and 18 digs for visiting UC Irvine (2-6) in a 15-12, 6-15, 15-7, 13-15, 15-11 victory.
In CCAA women’s basketball:
Chapman 60, Cal State Dominguez Hills 57--Linda Kirby scored 17 points for visiting Chapman.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Christ College Irvine 73, UC San Diego 63--Christ College Irvine stopped a 15-game winning streak by UC San Diego (21-5). Jackie Hatton scored 21 points and Stacy Kirch 13 for visiting Christ College Irvine (21-6).
In nonconference women’s tennis:
San Diego State 7, UC Irvine 2--San Diego State won five of six singles matches and two doubles matches to win at UC Irvine (4-7).
