With surge after surge, El Toro overwhelmed Edison, 5-0, Friday in a Southern Section Division 4-A quarterfinal at Edison High School.
El Toro (27-0-2), the top-seeded and defending 4-A champion, showed why it has been the division’s top-ranked team the entire season, while taking apart a strong Edison (18-4-6) team.
El Toro outshot the Chargers, 28-7. Five players scored for El Toro, which Tuesday will play Los Alamitos at a site to be determined.
El Toro scored at the 14-minute mark when Shawna Berke made a crossing pass that Kim Henry kicked into the corner of the goal.
Edison Coach Elias Shehadi said an El Toro player had been offside and that the goal should not have been allowed. Shehadi argued so vehemently that he was given a yellow card warning.
“With a good team like (El Toro), we can’t afford a mistake by the referees,” Shehadi said.
But Shehadi’s point eventually became moot. Shawn Viloria assisted on a goal by Sherri Kaminski with six minutes left in the half, giving El Toro a 2-0 lead.
El Toro scored on its first two shots in the second half--Berke scored after Denise Kenyon made a touch crossing pass on a throw-in by Kelly Thomson and Viloria made a shot from about 30 yards out for her 38th goal of the season.
Shannon deAvila scored El Toro’s final goal with one minute remaining.
