TENNIS ROUNDUP : On Birthday, Chang, 19, Gets Victory

No. 1-seeded Ivan Lendl and No. 5 Michael Chang took straight-set victories in Memphis Friday night, advancing to the semifinal round of the $750,000 Volvo Indoor tournament.

Chang, playing on his 19th birthday, dispatched Jeff Tarango, 6-3, 7-5, and said afterward: “I was recalling that last year on my birthday, I was playing in Philadelphia. I won the first set and was up, 4-1, in the second and wound up losing.”

Today, Chang will meet No. 7 Michael Stich, the defending champion and a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Mark Koevermans of the Netherlands.

Lendl powered his way past Darren Cahill, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. He will meet Derrick Rostagno, the 11th-seeded player, who rallied to defeat No. 13 Cristiano Caratti, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-0.

Stefan Edberg defeated fellow Swede Mangus Gustafsson, 6-2, 6-3, and moved into the semifinals of the $1-million Eurocard tournament in Stuttgart, Germany. Edberg’s opponent today will be Jan Siemerink, a 20-year-old Dutchman, who upset Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union, 7-6, 7-5. Edberg, ranked No. 1 in the world, needed only 61 minutes to win.

No. 7 Jonas Svensson of Sweden beat Karel Novacek, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, and will meet Guy Forget of France, the hottest player on the tour, in the semifinals. Forget, seeking his third title of the year, beat Goran Ivanisevic, 7-5, 7-6.

No. 8-seeded Manon Bollegraf upset No. 2 Conchita Martinez, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Virginia Slims of Oklahoma tournament at Oklahoma City. No. 1 Jana Novotna also advanced.

Stanford, UCLA, Georgia and Southern California--the top four seeded teams in the USTA Men’s National Indoor tournament--advanced to the semifinals with victories in Louisville.
