THE GULF WAR: The Home Front : Market Update
Oil: Crude closed down 59 cents at $17.91 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Dow Industrials: The 30 industrial average, which had been up more than 40 points, ended with a loss of 2.47 points at 2,889.36. For the week, the Dow fell 45.29 points.
Credit Markets: Most government bond prices closed unchanged or lower.
Metals: Gold fell $5.70 an ounce to settle at $357.00 on New York’s Commodity Exchange.
Currency: The dollar strengthened on world currency markets after President Bush gave the Iraqis an ultimatum to begin withdrawing their forces by noon EST today.
