Man Stabs Self at Statue of Liberty Replica
A Vietnamese immigrant, apparently frustrated at not being allowed to serve in the Gulf War, stabbed himself with a sword at the base of a Statue of Liberty replica in front of El Monte City Hall on Saturday, police said.
Khai Quoc Vo, 21, of Baldwin Park suffered a minor wound to the abdomen and was treated at a Norwalk hospital.
Police said he placed U.S. and South Vietnam flags near the statue, along with a sign expressing his wish that the war not become another Vietnam. Police said Vo, who claimed his father is a POW in Vietnam, was despondent over not being allowed to fight for the United States because of his immigrant status.
