And the winner . . . for the biggest campaign to generate Oscar “consideration” . . . MGM/Pathe’s “The Russia House.”
The producers and studio purchased a whopping 47 pages of Daily Variety and Hollywood Reporter ads to remind academy voters of the movie. The result: 0 nominations.
How did the other big campaigns pay off, in terms of nominations? Here’s our count:
* “Green Card,” 46 pages--1 nomination, best original screenplay.
* “The Godfather Part III,” 41 pages--7 nominations, including best picture.
* “Dick Tracy,” 40 pages--7 nominations, including Al Pacino for best supporting actor.
* “Avalon,” 39 pages--4 nominations, including best original screenplay.
* “Awakenings,” 36 pages--3 nominations, including best picture.
* “Edward Scissorhands,” 34 pages--1 nomination, makeup.
* “Ghost,” 32 pages--5 nominations, including best picture.
* “The Grifters,” 32 pages--4 nominations, including Anjelica Huston for best actress, Annette Bening for supporting actress.
* “Postcards From the Edge,” 33 pages--2 nominations, including Meryl Streep, best actress.
* “Pretty Woman,” 33 pages, 1 nomination, Julia Roberts for best actress.
As for “Dances With Wolves,” which got a startling 12 nominations, including best picture: a relatively modest 27 pages.
“GoodFellas”--which garnered six nominations, including best picture--purchased 24.
