NATION IN BRIEF : ALASKA : Hazelwood Appeals Oil Spill Conviction

Nearly a year after being found guilty of a misdemeanor charge in connection with the nation’s worst oil spill, former Exxon Valdez captain Joseph Hazelwood asked an appeals court in Anchorage to overturn his conviction. Hazelwood’s lawyers said they were seeking to have the conviction thrown out on the grounds of errors by the trial judge in instructing the jury. They said the jury should not have been allowed to consider the results of a blood-alcohol test in convicting the former captain on a charge of negligent discharge of oil.
