NATION : 2nd Mardi Gras Visitor Killed

NEW ORLEANS — Police today reported the second murder of a carnival visitor today as the city regrouped from a weekend of non-stop parades and street partying that will continue through Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday.
John Pierre, 30, of Amite, La., was shot in the neck during a holdup attempt about 3 a.m. Sunday, police said. A companion said Pierre tried to protect him from the gunman during a holdup attempt as they left the French Quarter, a focal point of the carnival celebrations.
Pierre was the second carnival visitor murdered within five days. Michael Alletto, 65, of Rochester, N.Y., was shot to death on the edge of the French Quarter Wednesday night. Travis Garrison, 16, was booked on charges of murder and attempted robbery in the case.
