COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cold-Shooting Chapman Loses
The Chapman College basketball team--missing its usually solid shooting--lost to Cal State Los Angeles, 53-51, Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game in Los Angeles.
The Panthers, who started the week ranked third in NCAA Division II in field-goal shooting percentage (54.5%), shot 38.1% in the first half and trailed, 41-27.
Despite shooting slightly worse (37%) in the second half, Chapman (12-12, 2-7 in the CCAA) had an opportunity to tie at the end.
Andre Hill made a three-point shot with about 20 seconds left to bring Chapman within three, 53-50. CS Los Angeles’ Gilbert Miller missed a free throw, setting up another Hill three-point attempt, which missed. Rog Middleton got the rebound and was fouled but made just one of two free throws with three seconds left.
In the Golden State Athletic Conference:
Southern California College 75, Christ College Irvine 72--Elbert Davis scored 25 points and had two key steals in the final seconds for host SCC (20-6, 6-3). Trailing, 59-52, with 7:03 to go, SCC went on a 10-0 run.
In Western Christian Athletic Conference men’s basketball:
Pacific Christian 102, Pacific Coast Baptist 71--Kenny Crawford had 37 points and 13 rebounds for visiting Pacific Christian (27-14, 13-3), which clinched the conference title.
