Driver in Fatal Crash Dies

A driver who ran a red light and broadsided another car, killing a Rolling Hills cheerleader and critically injuring three others, has died.
Teri Lynn Kaufman, 38, of Lomita was placed on life-support systems after the Friday night crash, but later was removed from the machines and died 8:30 a.m. Sunday, said a spokesman at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Police said Kaufman’s car broadsided one driven by Kathryn Kelly, 18, of Rolling Hills Estates as Kelly drove northbound on Normandie Avenue at 190th Street.
Kelly, a cheerleader at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, died at the scene of the accident. Two other school cheerleaders, 17-year-old Lisa Marie Dukes of Torrance and 16-year-old Paola Novoa of Hawthorne, were injured in the crash. A drill team member, Jodi Ichiyama, 17, of Torrance, also was injured.
On Wednesday, Dukes was in stable condition in the intensive-care unit of Torrance Memorial Hospital. Officials at Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center said Novoa is in stable condition. Ichiyama was in critical but stable condition at Harbor-UCLA.
