WORLD IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Salvador Rebels Told to Turn Over Killers

The State Department said that, if Salvadoran rebels are sincere in wanting justice for the killers of two American soldiers in El Salvador, the rebels will turn the suspects over to the Salvadoran government. Department spokesman Richard Boucher expressed skepticism about reports that the rebels had detained two guerrillas on the suspicion that they had executed the Americans after their helicopter was shot down Jan. 2. The spokesman noted that the Salvadoran government has appointed a judge to investigate the killings.
