THE SIDELINES : LaPorte Injured in Cycle Rally

AGADEZ, Niger — A helicopter evacuated Dan LaPorte of the United States to a hospital today after he was injured in a motorcycle crash during the Paris-Dakar Rally.
LaPorte, who was 12th in the overall standings, crashed about 22 miles from the start of the stage from Agadez to Tillia in Niger. The Californian reportedly suffered head and stomach injuries, but other details were unavailable.
Stephane Peterhansel of France on a Yamaha led the motorcycle division today and three-time champion, Ari Vatanen of Finland, held a comfortable lead in the automobile standings.
The competitors had a rest day Wednesday after starting from Paris on Dec. 29.
