Japan Route Transferred: The Transportation Department approved the transfer to American Airlines of the route between the United States and Japan now held by financially ailing Continental Airlines. The route links Seattle and Portland, Ore., to Tokyo and Osaka. The department said Continental was given permission to serve the route for up to another full year, until American gets planes to inaugurate service. The airlines applied for the transfer last month, saying quick action was needed because of Continental’s need for cash.
