PERTH, Australia — The United States remained unbeaten in the world water polo championships with a 6-5 victory over Australia Monday.
The Americans, who won their first two preliminary games, will play Germany Wednesday.
Doug Kimbell scored two goals for the United States and held Australia’s main threat, Geoff Clarke of Pepperdine, to one.
Goals by John Vargas in the third quarter and Kimbell in the fourth gave the Americans a 6-4 lead with six minutes remaining. Australia’s Paul Obermann scored with 2 1/2 minutes left, but the Americans held on.
Said U.S. Coach Bill Barnett: “Doug Kimbell was absolutely awesome. He kept Clarke from getting hold of the ball. Defense was the key to the game.”
